Professional terminology in the Dutch or English language, or ‘jargon’, is not always easy to find in standard dictionaries such as Google Translate, Oxford Dictionaries, Merriam Webster and Van Dale dictionaries for Dutch terms. These dictionaries translate many words, but specialist words are harder to find.
If you want to translate ‘dental imprint’ the machine translates it to ‘spoon’ whereas the professional term is ‘tray’. Our Jargon web-app can come in handy in this case.
The Jargon app provides interactive translations from one language to another. Taaltutor developed a Jargon app for the Dutch Health Tec Academy (DHTA) in Utrecht. This academy is a school for vocational professionals in five health professions: hearing aid specialist, optician, dental technician, technical ophthalmic assistant and orthopedic (shoe) technician. The students at the DHTA use the Jargon app frequently at school and at work when they are dealing with English-speaking clients or patients.
Multi-device, interactive and self-filling
The Jargon app works on any device, from PC and laptop into a tablet and smartphone. Where there is an Internet connection, you can use the web app. Another advantage is that the app is a self-filling tool. If a word is not included in the app the user can add it. An (international) editor will then translate the technical term.
Quote by a student who used the Jargon app
Dear Sandra, the reason I am writing you is to tell you that the DHTA Jargon app is very handy. It helps me with learning new words. Thank you! Hanke
The Jargon app lesson
There are several advantages in creating a Jargon app and in integrating it into your lesson:
- Students will actively look for the correct translation of a technical term;
- Students help to build their own jargon list;
- Teachers can ask students jargon to add to the app with self-made illustrations, photos, videos, audio, etc. This way the terminology ingrains more quickly, it adds a deeper learning experience and it is fun in the classroom;
- Teachers can use the jargon app to develop tests, in which the students themselves are actually the creators of their own material.
